CDD-GHANA STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TO GOVERNING BOARDS OF PUBLIC AND QUASI PUBLIC CORPORATIONS AND AGENCIES
The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) wishes to express its grave concern regarding the President's recently announced appointment of several Members of Parliament to chair or serve as members on boards and governing councils of state agencies and corporations. It is the Center's long-held view that such appointments undermine our current efforts to promote good governance and consolidate democracy in Ghana. In particular, the practice whereby Presidents appoint MPs, including some members of the Parliamentary Leadership, to extra-parliamentary quasi Executive-positions is harmful to the already weak system of checks and balances that underpins Ghana?s constitutional democracy.
Election of District, Municipal, Metropolitan Chief Executives advocated
GNA - Mr. George Kyea Baffour, Former President of the National Local Authority of Ghana, has called for the election of District, Municipal and Metropolitan Chief Executives (DMMCEs), to enable the people to have much say in the selection of those who govern them.
Afrobarometer Global Report Released
The Afrobarometer Secretariat has released its Round 4 Global report at a ceremony in Accra. Overall, across 19 countries surveyed in 2008, support for democracy stands at 70 percent, but there is wide variability, from 39 percent in Madagascar, to 85 percent in Botswana.

Three competing notions of democracy come to mind as I read and re-read Watching Democracy in Ghana, the compilation of Democracy Watch, which will be launched on Thursday, February 26, 2009. Democracy Watch is the flagship publication of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development, CDD, an independent, non-profit, non- partisan research think tank based in Accra.
"Polarisation of media erodes public confidence"
The programme Director for Media Foundation for West Africa, Mrs. Jeannette Quarcoopome, has said the polarization of the media along political lines during the 2008 elections have eroded the trust of the public in the profession.
