WAEON PRESS STATEMENT ON THE BRUTAL REPRESSION AGAINST PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATIONS BY CITIZENS OF SENEGAL
This cowardly act perpetrated in the full glare of Senegalese security officials led to the hospitalization of the President of the African Assembly for the Defence of Freedom (RADDHO) Alioune Tine and Vice Chair of WAEON, Mr. Oumar Diallo.
WAEON wishes to express its solidarity with the victims of the June 23rd demonstration and their families during this very difficult period and pray for Allah’s divine healing so that they would be fully restored.
We urge the Senegalese authorities, particularly the security agencies to put an immediate stop to the use of repression to curtail the exercise of the inalienable democratic rights of the citizens of Senegal to freedoms of expression, assembly, association and the right to participate peacefully in the governance of their country. Similarly, we call on all citizens of Senegal to respect the rule of law and desist from infringing on the rights of other citizens by engaging in looting and other violations of public order.
We call on the Senegalese authorities to immediately identify the perpetrators of the June 23rd crimes and bring them to justice.
WAEON wishes to remind the Senegalese Government of its international human rights obligations under the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance. Senegal should learn from recent agitations around the continent that repression is not an answer to the call of citizens for reform.
We enjoin the International Community; the African Union, United Nations, ECOWAS and Embassies in Senegal to condemn this action by the Wade government and to intervene early to forestall further unrest and democratic retrogression in Senegal.
The West Africa Election Observers Network (WAEON) is an independent, non-partisan and non-religious organization that aims at strengthening and supporting Citizens‘ Election Observation Groups (CEOGs) to conduct non-partisan citizen election observation and champion electoral reform and advocacy in their respective countries.
