Mission Statement of AFSTRAG

AFSTRAG's mission is to serve as the leading African action-oriented research group devoted to the study of continental and global strategic developments and providing an African perspective to the search for solutions to the problems of human security, peace and stability, and socio-economic conditions on the continent.

Objectives of AFSTRAG

The key objective is to provide in-depth study and analysis of the problems of peace, security and human development in Africa and propose policy options for their solutions.

As ancillary objectives, AFSTRAG

  • Undertakes systematic and objective analysis of issues affecting the African continent so as to involve indigenous strategic thoughts and doctrines;
  • Carry out research on issues and problems of peace, security
  • Undertake in-depth research and studies of conflicts within and between African countries so as to develop the capacity to contribute to their prevention, management and resolution;
  • Undertake on a continuing basis a study of the structure and process of peace-making, peace-keeping, peace enforcement and post-conflict peacebuilding in Africa;
  • Provide a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas through seminars, workshops, conferences, roundtables and similar gatherings of scholars, military experts, policy makers and enlighten the general public;
  • Publish books and manuscripts, occasional papers, newsletters and such other publications that will support the aims and objectives of AFSTRAG, inform policy makers and enlighten the general public;
  • Identify, collect, collate and disseminate information, and raise public awareness on the continent's strategic and security issues;
  • Set up a database on strategic issues to facilitate research and provide an assessment of the security climate for development activities in Africa;
  • Create links with similar institutions in Africa and the rest of the world;
  • Establish networks with scholars working on human security issues in Africa and the rest of the world;
  • Provide research facilities for visiting scholars and practitioners from different parts of the world in order to enhance mutual understanding of global strategic issues;
  • Undertake collectively or through its research networks studies for African and foreign governments, international organizations, industries and specialized agencies with interests in Africa;
  • Raise funds through voluntary donations, grants, endowments, membership fees and sales of publications and contributions from national chapters, to support its activities;
  • Promote good governance in Africa through research studies, election monitoring and advocacy.

A Brief Statement of Activities

Among the activities are:

  • Working with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and ANAD's conflict management system to develop a harmonized conflict research mechanism;
  • Development of a database on Peace and Security Studies in West Africa;
  • Civil Society and Ethnic Conflict Management in Nigeria;
  • Civil society and Good governance and the Challenge of Regional Security in West Africa;
  • Child Soldiers, Civil Wars and Post-conflict Peacebuilding in West Africa;
  • AFSTRAG organizes workshops, seminars, conferences and colloquia to discuss issues of interest to the organization; and
  • In conjunction with other organizations hold workshops and conferences both locally and internationally on conflicts and security issues.
