The mission of AREF is to continue to be a key player in the relief environment in Africa after all efforts at attaining peace has failed.AREF strives to develop the potential within Africans to activate and provide humanitarian aid and longer term development solutions to the refugee and returnee problem.

Objectives of AREF

  • Strategic and scientific design of solutions to the root causes of the refugee phenomenon;
  • Direct cooperation with the UNHCR, OAU and Refugee Commissions of various African Countries;
  • Production and distribution of multimedia documentaries and periodic publications on refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons;
  • The organization of workshops, seminars, conferences and colloquia on all matters relating to refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons;
  • The mobilization and deployment of volunteers for humanitarian assignments particularly among refugees in different parts of Africa; and
  • The global mobilization of resources and public support to fulfill the objectives of AREF.

A Brief Statement of Activities

  • Establishment of a project on African Garments for African refugees and internally displaced persons (AGAR) whereby garments made from locally produced textiles are made and delivered to refugees in different countries;
  • Setting up of the first African Refugee studies Centre dedicated to the scientific study of the refugee problematic at the Lagos State University (LASU);
  • Active in the Great Lakes crisis by establishing the Central Africa Relief Emergency (CARE) programme;
  • Active in ECOWAS countries;
    &
  • Designed and concluded a Memorandum of Understanding with the Africa Humanitarian Action (AHA), for effecting a Pan-African Mutual Representation;
  • Dispatch of medical volunteers to Rwanda;
  • Fumigation of refugee camps in Nigeria, especially the Oru camp in Ogun State
