Mission Statement of CODESRIA
CODESRIA is a pan-African NGO serving African research institutes, the social science faculties of African Universities, and professional organizations

Objectives of CODESRIA

  • Its primary objectives are to facilitate research, promote research-based publishing, and to encourage the exchange of information among African scholars.
  • A brief statement of Activities
  • coordinating the research activities of 20 to 30 scholars in a variety of disciplines, whose studies investigate common themes?
  • Publications of findings in CODESRIA's Working Paper series.
  • Organization of conferences where social scientists and policy-makers meet to discuss important current issues of concern to all African countries, including democracy and human rights; democratization; conflict resolution in the Great Lakes Region.
  • Has been involved in the 'Conflict Prevention in West Africa' (CPWA) program and 'The Causes of Conflict in West Africa' (CCWA) program; for example it played an active role in activities examining the regional conflict in Liberia, the conflict between Senegal and Mauritania, and the Tuareg conflict in Mali and Niger.
  • An important initiative of CODESRIA has been the establishment of an Academic Freedom Unit which monitors academic freedom, documents and publicizes cases of violation of academic freedom, acts to support individuals and professional organizations facing harassment.
  • Promotes research into academic freedom and human rights in Africa.

    Publications:
    The CODESRIA Bulletin, CODESRIA Working Papers, CODESRIA Monograph Series, Directory of Research Projects and Training Institutes in Africa, Annual report of 'Academic Freedom in Africa'.
